Heli-Ski Guide

Heli-Skiing vs Cat Skiing

Both get you off the groomers and into untracked snow, and both are guided backcountry trips. The difference comes down to how you get up the mountain, and that shapes almost everything else. Here's a straight comparison of heli-skiing vs cat skiing to help you decide.

The core difference: helicopter vs snowcat

Heli-skiing uses a helicopter to move you between runs; cat skiing uses a snowcat, the tracked vehicle that also grooms ski resorts. The helicopter is faster and reaches higher, steeper, and more remote terrain. The snowcat is slower and road-bound, but it keeps running in weather that can ground a helicopter.

Terrain and vertical

Because a helicopter can access alpine bowls, glaciers, and big descents, heli-skiing generally opens up more terrain and more vertical in a day. Cat skiing tends to focus on gladed, mid-mountain terrain within its road network. For skiers chasing the biggest mountains and the most runs, heli wins; for a relaxed pace in the trees, cat skiing is lovely.

Weather, cost, and pace

Cat skiing is usually less expensive and more weather-resilient, since the cat runs regardless of visibility. Heli-skiing is the premium experience: more terrain, more vertical, and that unmistakable feeling of flying into the mountains, at a higher price. Neither is 'better' in the abstract. It depends on your budget, the experience you want, and how much terrain matters to you.

Which is right for you?

If you want the full big-mountain experience with maximum terrain and don't mind the occasional weather day, heli-skiing is hard to beat, and CMH's operation is built around making it accessible and well-managed. If value and weather-proofing top your list, cat skiing is a great option. I specialise in CMH and Mike Wiegele heli-skiing, so if that's the direction you're leaning, I can help you plan it properly.
